The Special Collections Department has significant manuscript holdings of correspondence, journals, play scripts, works in progress, and similar items. Examples of such materials are the papers of Ross Lockridge, Director of the Indiana Federal Writers' Project (1936-1938); Gilbert Coble's journals and his correspondence with Jesse Stuart; Warren N. Cordell's papers on book collecting and lexicography; Mitford Mathews's personal papers and various writings on language and lexicography, particularly American regional English; Fredrick Bunce's research materials on Aretino and related material; and Civil War correspondence, including George Gegner's letters to his future wife, Lizzie Wayman (temporarily in PDF format); and Clyde Fitch's plays as performed in bound typescripts. Additionally, some manuscripts are contained in cataloged items.

The Department receives the official records or publications of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE). It it is the permanent home of The Mystery Fancier, published in Madison, Indiana and the Archives of the National Kindergarten Association. Also, the department is pleased to house the compositions of Dr. Paul Hagan, an alumnus and generous supporter of Indiana State University.
