Printable Checklist

  • Turnitin software is not a complete solution to the problem of plagiarism, but it can be a useful tool, if used carefully.

  • Turnitin compares papers submitted by your students with
    • papers and other sources available on the Internet
    • term papers submitted by students at Indiana State and at other schools
    • articles in ProQuest databases
  • Turnitin does not
    • distinguish between properly cited text and plagiarized text
    • catch plagiarized text that is not in its database, such as text taken from EBSCOhost or other library databases
    • catch improperly paraphrased text, made-up facts, or false citations
    • analyze students' writing styles
  • Turnitin can be used
    • for plagiarism detection
    • to teach students about use of sources

  • Turnitin is integrated into ISU's Blackboard course management system. Log in to Turnitin by logging into Blackboard (http://blackboard.indstate.edu/) with your Sycamore login and password.

  • Create new assignments in order for your students to submit their work.
  • Students submit assignments by logging in to Blackboard and clicking the Assignments button.
  • You can read their work by logging in to Blackboard, clicking on "Control Panel," then on "Turnitin Assignments," and finding their papers.

  • If you have questions about Turnitin, contact a librarian or the Office of Information Technology or consult Turnitin's training materials.
