Searching the ISU Library Catalog and Article Databases

General Database Search Tips

  • For off-campus access to ISU databases, you must follow these instructions.
  • Use terms found in the table listed above.
  • Start with a general search, then narrow it by adding additional terms.
  • Use the advanced or guided search to do complex searching.
  • Look for subject headings that pertain to your topic. Then do searches on those subject headings in the subject field.
  • Use Boolean operators (AND, OR) in your search. AND will narrow a search. OR will broaden a search. For more information, look at the library's Keyword/Boolean Search Guide (requires Adobe Acrobat).
  • Truncate search terms when necessary. Truncation will allow you to search for variations of a word. First, you need to determine the root of a particular word by removing letters at the end of the word. Then add the truncation symbol. A search in EBSCOhost on the term interact* will find articles that contain words starting with interact, such as interact, interactive, interacts, interacting, interactive, etc. Each database uses a different truncation symbol. See the sample searches below for which one to use with each database.
  • You can limit your searches to only get articles that are available electronically in full-text by clicking on the full-text box on the main search page. Full-text articles are nearly always available in LexisNexis Academic.
  • If your search gets too many articles, search for your term in a particular field (such as company, subject, title, headline and lead paragraphs). If your search gets too few articles, search for your term using a keyword search or full-text search.
  • Focus on databases that ISU subscribes to, not freely available web search engines such as Google, AltaVista, Yahoo, etc. In general, databases such as ERIC, ProQuest Education Complete, ABI/INFORM, Business Source Premier and LexisNexis Academic will give you better quality information that is more relevant to your research needs. The use of web search engines is frequently a time-consuming process, often resulting in information that is of little or no value to a research paper.

ISU Library Catalog search here for more than two million books, microforms, videos and journal titles found in the ISU Library.

CQ Researcher Produced by Congressional Quarterly, CQ Researcher explores a single "hot" issue in the news in depth each week. Every 12,000-word report is written by an experienced journalist and features comments from experts, lawmakers and citizens on all sides of every issue. Numerous charts, graphs and sidebar articles -- plus a pro-con feature, a chronology, lengthy bibliographies and a list of contacts -- round out each report. Reports related to this topic are "Combating Plagiarism," "Cheating in Schools" and "Teaching Values."

ERIC Via EBSCOhost, ERIC provides extensive coverage of major developments in educational research and practice. ERIC includes citations to educational journal articles and unpublished educational documents. ERIC documents are materials such as curriculum guides, research reports, and program descriptions which have almost never been published in the traditional sense, i.e., in a journal or book.
