Cunningham Memorial Library's Reserve Desk offers Electronic Reserves (e-reserves). E-reserves provide a place to make course resources accessible to your students 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Students may access course materials through the web, thus allowing them access to information outside the Library's physical environment.
E-reserves materials are made available through two formats: print documents scanned and converted to PDF files and electronic full-text articles linked from one of the databases. Users need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the scanned files. (A free copy of the latest version of the Adobe Reader software may be obtained at: http://www.indstate.edu/itdept/readers/acrobat/.)
Print copies or copies of articles submitted on disk will be kept in the Reserve area. They will be used in case of computer downtime. Your copies will be returned at the end of the semester for which they were submitted.
LINKING TO E-RESERVES THROUGH BLACKBOARD
Please note that from your course's Blackboard site, you can set up links directly into E-Reserves at
the Course page-level. If you would like more information and assistance with this simple and useful
feature, please contact your Liaison Librarian for a quick consultation.
The scanning process is time-intensive. Although every effort will be made to insure a 1-week turnaround time for processing electronic course Reserve materials, delays may occur when the Library receives large numbers of Reserve items. A timeline indicating when materials are needed will help prioritize the e-reserve workload. Indicate on the Reserve form the dates by which different items are needed by students.
Please indicate if a document has been previously submitted for scanning.
Fill out a Reserve Request form for each item placed on Reserve. Sign the copyright compliance statement.
Include a full citation identifying each article placed on Reserve.
Files can be turned in to the Reserve Desk on paper, a floppy disk, or a zip disk. Paper size is limited to 8.5" x 14." 8.5" x 11" is preferred.
If you are submitting files on disk, please submit files in a digital format like PDF, Microsoft Word, or PowerPoint (please contact us for more information on submitting these types of files).
Larger documents will be divided into parts (e.g., Part 1, Part 2, etc.).
Copies should be single-sided on white paper.
Provide first generation photocopies. Copies should be in the best condition available, with minimum 1/2" borders to prevent omission of any text or image.
Copies should not have black toner margins.
Have simple, high-contrast illustrations. Generally, photocopied photographs do not scan well. Please indicate whether they may be omitted to reduce file size.
Copies should be unbound and unstapled.
Photocopies of materials may be placed on Reserve subject to copyright regulations. For purposes of copyright compliance, a full citation (author, title, publisher, date, etc.) documenting the source must accompany each article. The Reserve Desk accepts material from faculty with the understanding that the faculty member has complied with the requirements of copyright law. All photocopies submitted must be accompanied by the signed copyright compliance statement that is included on the Library's Course Reserve Request Form, found at: photocopies.doc. This statement affirms that copied Reserve materials meet fair use guidelines or that the copyright holder has given permission to reproduce the material.
We cannot place course packets on Reserve. We cannot place more than 10 percent of a book nor can we place more than one article from the same issue of a journal on Reserve unless the faculty member has obtained copyright permission from the copyright holder.
To comply with copyright guidelines, electronic Reserves materials are only available to ISU students, staff, and faculty. Viewing these materials requires authentication as a campus user through the MyISU portal. For off-campus access, users must configure their browser proxy settings to obtain access. Instructions on how to do this may be found at proxy_instructions.html.
Copyrighted Reserve materials will be withdrawn and returned to you at the end of each semester unless you have copyright permission from the copyright holder for extended Reserve use.
To obtain copyright permissions from the publisher, click here or go to http://www.copyright.iupui.edu/_pereserve.htm.
We will place your personal book copies on Reserve, too. The Library is not liable if personal copies are lost; however, Reserve staff will contact the patron concerning replacement charges, which are consistent with Library fine policies. The form for placing personal copies on Reserve may be found at: ../forms/personal.doc.
Reserve Desk staff will pull Library books for placement on Reserve. Please provide us with a list of the books and their call numbers. The form for placing material on electronic Reserve may be found at: libraryowned.doc.
The period of time required for processing a Reserve list varies according to the volume of Reserve requests, availability of materials, and delays in retrieving books on loan. Please keep in mind that processing delays increase during the beginning of each semester when the number of requests is high. Lists will be processed in the order in which they are received. Submit a request form at least 1 week prior to the time an assignment is announced to the students. Please do not request more than 30 items for a course without consulting with the Reserve staff about how you would like the items prioritized. If a CD is placed on Reserve (either accompanied by a book or alone), please verify that the Library has the needed application program. If the Library does not own the application program, we suggest that you allow the student to check the material out of the Library to use it elsewhere.
We suggest that if you have several student instructors teaching the same class and placing the same materials on Reserve that materials, both books and photocopies, be placed under one name (perhaps under the professor's name who is supervising the student instructors). Such conformity facilitates the Reserve Desk staff locating the material and insures that students have the greatest chance of having the material available for use.
Library periodical issues (bound or unbound), reference books, and Interlibrary Loan material may not be placed on Reserve.
