Library Use Policy for Patrons

Use of the library and/or its materials constitutes acceptance of the terms set forth in this document.

The following policies have been developed in order to foster a safe and civil environment for both library patrons and library staff of Cunningham Memorial Library. Violations of any of these guidelines may result in individuals or groups being asked to leave the library, or in more serious cases, requesting assistance from campus police. The library suports and enforces the ISU Code of Student Conduct in all its operations.

ALL Library users are expected to abide by the following guidelines.

  1. Legal
    1. Do not engage in any activity in violation of Federal, State, local, or other applicable law, including University and Library policies.
    2. The use of alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, or vaping is prohibited in the Library.
    3. Do not bring animals and pets into the library, service animals excepted.
    4. Solicitation of any kind or for any purpose without prior approval to the Library Dean or the Dean's representative is prohibited.
  2. Offenses Against Persons
    1. Maintain acceptable personal hygiene. Persons with odor offensive enough to constitute a nuisance to others will be asked to leave the library.
    2. Do not behave in a disruptive or potentially harmful manner. Do not harass or speak abusively to other library users or to library staff.
    3. Do not carry or display weapons.
    4. Do not engage in sexual activity of any kind or engage in sexual harassment or indecent exposure.
    5. Do not block walkways, exits, or entrances, leave belongings unattended, or monopolize library space with excess personal belongings.
  3. Offenses Against Property
    1. Do not tamper with, damage, or destroy library facilities, materials, or equipment.
    2. Shoes must be worn at all times.
    3. Use library furniture, equipment, and materials for their intended function.
    4. Use restrooms only for their intended purpose. Bathing and laundering are prohibited.
    5. Leave the library at the designated closing times or upon request from library personnel or ISU Public Safety Officers.
    6. Excessive sleeping and/or camping is prohibited in the Library.
    7. Do not trespass in nonpublic areas or be in the library without permission of an authorized library employee before or after library operating hours.
  4. Minors; Adults with Unique Needs
    1. Minors must be accompanied by a supervising adult. The supervising adult is responsible for the behavior and safety of minors in their charge. Adults who cannot care for themselves must be monitored by their caregivers.
  5. Personal Belongings
    1. The Library is not responsible for belongings left in/on Library property.
    2. Items left unattended may be sent to Lost and Found.
  6. Computer Use
    1. ISU students, staff and faculty have priority for library public computer use. As a depository of government publications, Library staff will make accommodation for users needing access to online US government publications. Others may be asked to relinquish their computer.
    2. Do not occupy more than one computer workstation at a time.
    3. Do not sleep at public workstations.
    4. Do not hold computer workstations for future use.
    5. Headphones or earbuds are to be used in the Library. Do not use external speakers on any electronic device. Headphones are available for checkout at the Public Service Desk.
